Ainsi la question du langage n'a jamais été absente dans l'histoire de la philosophie. Cependant, il convient de remarquer que c'est seulement à l'époque contemporaine plus précisément au XIXème siècle que va naitre réellement ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler le tournant linguistique d'inspiration scientifique. Wittgenstein est une figure emblématique de ce tournant linguistique dans le sens où il a pris une part active dans l'animation des projets logicistes mus par le tournant dont la base fut la mise en avant d'un langage logique ou formel. Au bout d'un cheminement de pensée, Wittgenstein décèlera des limites au langage logique autrefois exigé pour faire sens. Leur dépassement a suscité une seconde orientation de ses pensées dont la philosophie des jeux de langage. Interest in language has its roots in the ancient world right up to the present day. Wittgenstein is an emblematic figure of this linguistic turn, in the sense that he played an active role in the logicist projects driven by the turn, the basis of which was the development of a logical or formal language. At the end of his thought process, Wittgenstein discovered the limits of the logical language previously required to make sense. Overcoming these limitations gave rise to a second line of thought, the philosophy of language games.
