Il a régné sur le Songhoy 28 ans durant, de 1464 à 1492, et s’est révélé un des plus grands visionnaires et hommes d’Etat du Soudan occidental. Il a en effet initié un grand projet révolutionnaire d’irrigation à partir du fleuve Niger à la dimension de son ambition impériale. Ce projet devait booster le développement de son pays, en assurant la sécurité alimentaire de son peuple et en pourvoyant le marché sous régional, voire au-delà. D’où la présente réflexion qui s’est assigné l’objectif d’appréhender l’importance et l’actualité de la mise en valeur du fleuve Niger par le projet d’irrigation initié par Sonni Ali Ber au XVe siècle. La question principale qui soutient notre problématique est la suivante : En quoi la mise en valeur de fleuve Niger à travers le projet d’irrigation de Sonni Ali Ber est source d’inspiration ? Pour étayer cette question, les auteurs ont recouru à la consultation de la littérature se rapportant à cette période de l’empire et à des enquêtes de terrain, notamment orales en différents lieux où la mémoire de cet empire est conservée et transmise de génération en génération au travers de la tradition orale. Considered to be the 18th Sonni, Sonni Ali Ber, known as ‘Ali the Great’, was the founder of the Songhoy Empire, the third and last empire of Western Sudan. He ruled Songhoy for 28 years, from 1464 to 1492, and proved to be one of the greatest visionaries and statesmen of West Sudan. He initiated a major revolutionary irrigation project from the Niger River that matched his imperial ambition. This project was intended to boost the development of his country by ensuring food security for his people and supplying the sub-regional market and beyond. Hence the present reflection, which aims to understand the importance and relevance of the enhancement of the Niger River through the irrigation project initiated by Sonni Ali Ber in the 15th century. The main question underpinning our analysis is as follows: How is the enhancement of the Niger River through Sonni Ali Ber's irrigation project a source of inspiration? To support this question, the authors consulted literature relating to this period of the empire and conducted field surveys, particularly oral surveys in various places where the memory of this empire is preserved and passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition.
